General Election 2010

Year 5/6 followed the 2010 General Election, culminating in them holding their own election in school. The class was put into random groups at the start of the project and one member from each group chose a political party from a bag. The five parties that our five groups focused on were Conservatives, Green Party, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru. The Parties then began their research of their chosen party looking at four agreed areas which have an impact on their own lives; Economy, Education, Environment and Health. Each group had to produce a PowerPoint slideshow to show to Year 1/2 and 3/4, campaign posters, information leaflet and rosettes.

The five groups e-mailed their party's candidate for the constituency that our school falls into, Ogmore. The Green Party weren't standing in Ogmore so they e-mailed the national Green Party. The first party to respond was the Green Party who sent a general e-mail back with information. Labour's candidate then sent a personal addressed e-mail offering the group his part's policies and a good luck message. Plaid Cymru then sent a parcel through the post with a personal letter and a weighty collection of campaign posters, leaflets, information booklets and pens and pencils. The Conservatives then sent a bag full of posters, leaflets and stickers and a personal e-mail outlining all of their policies and a good luck message. The Liberal Democrats did not respond at all to that particular group's e-mail.

The General Election took place on Thursday May 6th and our school was chosen to be a polling station, therefore the school was closed that day. Our election took place on Wednesday May 5th. One representative from each group went to Years 1/2 and 3/4 to present their slideshows and encourage the pupils to vote for their party. Voting cards were handed out, filled in and placed in the ballot box.

The count took place on Friday May 7th. There were only 6 spoiled ballot papers with the class being ruthless and at the same time fair when deciding whether or not a ballot paper should be counted or not. The final results saw The Green Party win with 23 votes, Plaid Cymru coming second with 18, Labour third with 16, Liberal Democrats fourth with 8 and Conservatives in fifth with 7.

Congratulations to all five parties!
